A small themed exhibition at the Steigerwald Center currently invites visitors to rediscover the forest from different perspectives.
Forests provide us with food and medicine; they serve as habitats for numerous animals and plants; they supply the valuable raw material of wood; and they have always sparked people’s imaginations. On a varied tour, visitors learn about the diverse treasures the forest holds and why it is of inestimable value to both people and nature. The exhibition focuses not only on the forest’s well-known functions but also on its less obvious aspects. It guides visitors through eight thematic areas: The Forest as a Pantry: What edible treasures grow in the forest? The Forest as a Habitat: A fascinating home for countless animals and plants. The Mythical Forest: Mysterious stories, legends, and beliefs surrounding the forest. The Forest in Transition: How are our forests changing, and what challenges lie ahead for them? Wood as a Raw Material: A versatile and renewable resource of great importance to our daily lives. The Forest Pharmacy: Medicinal plants and traditional uses from the forest. The Forest as an Experience: Why a walk in the forest appeals to the body, mind, and senses alike. The Forest as a Teacher: What can we learn from the forest’s natural cycles and diversity? The organizers, Theresia Schendel and Yvonne Kocher—both foresters and forest educators at the Steigerwald Center—aim to spark curiosity, impart knowledge, and sharpen visitors’ awareness of the forest’s many functions and facets. “If you look closely, you’ll discover an impressive variety of treasures among the moss, leaves, and treetops—perhaps even during a guided tour here at the center,” explains Theresia Schendel. The exhibition is on view through November 15 at the Steigerwald Center, with free admission. Current opening hours: Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, g
