A Forgotten Chapter: Schweinfurt's Jewish Wine History

City Archives Presents Exhibition on the History of Jewish Wine Merchants Recently discovered original letters, recipes, and centuries-old wine bottles shed light on a previously little-known chapter of history: In 19th-century Schweinfurt, Jewish wine and spirits merchants rose to become highly successful entrepreneurs. While the firms S. Mohrenwitz and M. Marx attained the status of Royal Bavarian Court Suppliers, the Kleemann family won a bronze medal at the 1855 Paris World’s Fair for their international wines. The L. Hirsch company from Schweinfurt even marketed itself in the 1920s as the leading German liqueur brand. Persecution, flight, and deportation during the Nazi era led to these families and their businesses falling almost completely into oblivion. Admission is free!
