Permanent Exhibition: Prints, Book Art, and the Dürer Collection

With the collection of industrialist Dr. h.c. Otto Schäfer (1912–2000), the Otto Schäfer Museum in Schweinfurt houses prints dating from the time of Gutenberg through to more recent centuries. Early block-printed books illustrate the beginnings of the printing era, which would go on to have a decisive influence on human cultural development.

Starting with the Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer—whose graphic works are represented here in a uniquely comprehensive collection—the tour takes visitors through major historical events, past numerous first editions from the 18th and 19th centuries, and on into the modern era. The special exhibitions consistently explore literary or historical themes or present contemporary approaches to the art of printing—a dialogue spanning six centuries of history.
